A beam is a horizontal structural span designed to spread load to bearing elements. It transfers unsupported loads (construction elements, furniture, etc.) to pillars, columns or walls. A beam can be of wood, metal, reinforced concrete or a combination of materials. A beam can be categorized by its function (main, joist, header, etc.) or its form (arched, latticed, truss, etc.). A beam is a horizontal spanning element under flexion. Wooden beams can be traditional, composite, trussed or glue-laminate. Concrete beams include reinforced concrete (prefabricated or poured on-site) and prestressed types. Metal beams include solid girders and built-up or flitch girders.
