Carpeting is a textile product affixed to a floor for comfort and decoration. Materials, fabrication techniques, design and color vary greatly. Carpet comes in rolls or squares and is held down by double-sided adhesive tape, glue or wooden tack strips.
Both natural and synthetic fibers, are used in carpet manufacture, either separately or blended. Wool, cotton, linen, polyamide and polypropylene are among the most common materials. Different techniques offer loop, pile, flocked and printed finishes.
Choice will depend on constituent materials, design and intended use. Durability is indicated on the T scale, from one for light use to six for high-traffic areas. Manufacturers usually indicate a carpet's suitability for use with furniture with casters, in offices, in areas where the floor might get wet, or for other situations.
Natural fibers are comfortable and durable, while synthetics are less expensive and more widely available. A blend can constitute a good compromise between price and characteristics.
