The Online Architecture and Design Exhibition
A ceramic tile is a thin, flat, generally square element made from clay, silicon, coloring and other raw materials. It is used as an interior and exterior wall and floor covering. Its surface can be fashioned to resemble stone, marble, metal, wood or even leather, making it a very popular building material.
Interior tiles are found primarily on kitchen and bathroom walls and floors. The weatherproof nature of exterior tiles makes them suitable for swimming pools and terraces. The variety of models includes large sizes, mosaic, non-slip and extra-sturdy tiles.
Two different processes are used to manufacture ceramic tiles. In the single-firing method, glaze and decoration are applied to the tile just after shaping. It is then fired in the kiln. Double-firing involves firing the tile both before and after glazing.
