The Online Architecture and Design Exhibition
A chipboard, or particleboard panel is made by binding particles of wood, sand, cork, straw or other materials under pressure with a glue, resin or cement. This process results in a stable, uniform element for use in construction and carpentry.
Manufacturer's specifications will indicate whether the panels are designed for use in dry or moist environments. They are found in raised access floors, suspended ceilings, partitions, furniture, doors, window frames and other uses.
A variety of surface treatments can be added to such panels, though some include a factory finish of plastic, linoleum, melamine, rubber or another material. Depending on constituents and manufacturing process, panels can be fireproof or water-resistant, offer thermal or acoustic insulation, or display other characteristics.
