A classic mirror has a form, design or construction which is associated with a particular period or style. For example, a Baroque style wall mirror may have a frame of intricately carved hardwood, while an early Victorian freestanding model is more likely to have a very simple, elegant hardwood frame.
These mirrors are used for decoration, as well as to increase the amount of natural light or apparent spaciousness of a room. They are common in reception areas in the home and in hotels, restaurants and other commercial environments. There are wall-mounted, floor, table and hand models, some with a swivel, or integrated storage.
Hardwood, softwood, plaster, iron and other materials are commonly used to make such mirrors.
Mirror style can be chosen to complement or contrast with existing furniture. Determine its prime function and where it will be placed. Long mirrors are ideal for checking appearance, while large mirrors mounted above furniture or over mantles can be a great way to make a room appear bigger.
Consider ease of maintenance. The care of antique mirrors, especially the glass, may be more difficult and delicate. Reproductions using modern methods and materials are easier to care for without the intervention of a specialist.
