A classic style wall mirror is characterized by form, materials or construction suggesting a specific style or epoch. For example, a Baroque mirror may have an elaborately hand-carved hardwood frame, in contrast to the much simpler frame of a Georgian type.
These mirrors can make a great complement or centerpiece in either domestic or commercial settings. They may be vertical, horizontal, full length or portrait. They are often hung above furniture or a mantelpiece. In addition to serving personal care or appearance needs, such mirrors may be used to increase the perceived volume of a space or to increase its luminosity.
Carved gilt wood, hardwood and iron are commonly employed in the manufacture of classic mirrors.
Consider how mirror style will contrast with or complement the surrounding decor and what effect it will have on the perception of the space. Ensure that the partition or wall is capable of supporting the weight, since some mirrors with solid frames are particularly heavy.
Mounting height will vary with use. A mirror for checking appearance should be at head height, while one designed to reflect a particular view or enhance luminosity may require a different arrangement. Mirrors in high-traffic or commercial settings must comply with local regulations. Some antique glass is particularly fragile and can be dangerous if broken.
