A leather lamp is often thought of as the product of a Moroccan artisan working with sheep skin. In fact, such lamps are made in numerous countries and in a wide variety of styles. The hides come from various animals and are tanned in different ways.
ApplicationsSuch fixtures take the form of wall, floor, table and other types of lamp. They are intended exclusively for interior illumination.
TechnologiesThe hide must undergo several tanning steps before being used to make a lamp. Moroccan and other artisans usually use traditionally-tanned leather. Today, it is possible to find lamps made from regenerated, recycled or recyclable leather, processed by artisans or master craftspeople whose goal is to create a perfectly ecological product. In either case, imperfections are a guaranty of craft origin.
How to chooseThese products can be ethnic and artisanal, or ultramodern. Choice will depend on personal taste and surrounding decor. Compact fluorescent bulbs should be used in such lamps not only because they consume less energy, but also because they give off less heat and are less likely to damage the leather. Maintenance should take the form of applying organic wax with a soft brush every four to six months.
