A contemporary sideboard is a low cabinet or table often used for storing and displaying kitchenware or other items. It may express some originality through its use of color, form or material, and may even reinterpret traditional or period designs. Although sideboards are normally waist-high, some are taller. Such furniture is found in a number of domestic or commercial spaces. For example, it may be used to display ornaments in a living room, creating a focal point, or to store tableware or household items. It is sometimes used for serving food.
A contemporary sideboards are made of solid wood, plywood, glass, laminated particle board or even lacquered glass, among other materials.
Determine whether the sideboard will stand out or blend with the style of the room. While strong geometric lines or a contrasting form or finish can be used to create a focal point on a wall, contemporary designs which match the surroundings or nearby furniture may serve as a subtle complement.
Ensure that the sideboard leaves enough space for circulation. Consider storage needs, maintenance and sturdiness. If it is to be wall-mounted, consider fastening method and the wall's ability to support the weight of a fully-loaded unit.
