A contemporary wall shelf is a wall-mounted unit used for storage and/or display. It expresses originality through its use of form, color or construction, sometimes reinterpreting traditional or period styles.
These units may be designed to blend into or contrast with their surroundings. At home, they are used for organization or to display objects expressing personal interests. In commerce, they are employed to enhance product visibility or access, as in a bar where ingredients are aligned within easy reach.
Such shelves are made from a wide variety of materials, including glass, acrylic, lacquered steel, solid wood and laminated board.
Consider available space, the number of items to be displayed and mounting method. Verify that the wall can support the weight of the shelf when fully loaded. Built-in cupboards, drawers or other features may be desired to hide or protect certain objects. Shelves holding frequently-used items should be easy to reach. Other factors include sturdiness, ease of cleaning and maintenance requirements.
