A design public bench is a long seat, often for exterior use, that expresses individuality through its innovative use of materials, form, function or construction. On ArchiExpo, these items are arranged by such properties as material or intended use.
This furniture may be used to create a focal point in public spaces or encourage social interaction between users. It may constitute unconventional seating in commercial outdoor spaces, such as bars or restaurants, in public spaces such as shopping centers or parks, or even in domestic outdoor areas. It may include extra features, such as built in lighting, planters or tables.
Materials as diverse as concrete, stone, wood, metal and even recycled plastic are used to make these benches.
Consider how bench form, style and color will fit the environment and whether it will serve as a focal point. The bench may be fixed or mobile, and may require periodic storage, such as those for commercial terraces and homes. Park and street benches usually are permanent fixtures designed to withstand misuse and harsh weather.
Consider how much maintenance is required and whether the bench will need a special protective finish. Some plastic benches have UV-resistant finishes, while metal benches may be coated to protect against corrosion.
