The DS -166 from Hugo de Ruiter can justifiably lay claim to being unique and unrepeatable. The original idea was based on an artistic principle, yet without neglect of functionality. The outer form of the armchair has all the quality of a sculpture thanks to its upward tapering lines. This in turn results not from a mere whim of the designer or from the proverbial wet finger held aloft to see which way the wind is blowing. To the contrary: it is the palpable consequence of the inherent laws of ergonomics. What Hugo de Ruiter is attempting to do with the DS-166 is to express the idea of comfort and security through the swell of the armchair#s lines. And it is a security that anyone sitting in the DS-166 feels most profoundly. In figurative terms, his design blends the concepts of guarding and cosseting. The armchair#s swivel-tilt mechanism additionally helps underpin a sense of the lightness of being. In the DS-166, the grande geste of design becomes a harbinger of comfort, while the reduction of its lines imbues this seating with a peerless richness.

This piece represents the earliest developments of our bent laminated furniture. The entire seat pivots at the front and can be adjusted by means of a leather strap. All of the joinery is exposed and shows the mechanical, wedged construction of the Maple frame.

|
When we began experimenting with seats made with bent-laminated slats, the goal was to get as close to the comfort of upholstery as we could using solid woods. The individual laminations bend with the weight of the body, easing stress on spine and shoulder blades. We've also worked to develop a lumbar support that is almost universally comfortable. The chair seat pivots at the front, and movable steel pins in the legs allow the seat to be positioned at different reclining angles. The back is high enough for even the tallest of my friends to rest their head.
This design is about more than seeking comfort though. It reflects a long held interest in the skeletal nature of structures, like bridges and timber-frame houses. Beside our heavier designs, we will continue to engineer pieces that are stripped to a minimum of materials: chairs built with individual "sticks" of uniform dimension, carefully joined to create a rigid frame.

The application to design of the principles or comfort gives rise to spectacular results, with an unquestionable visual mpact, like in this model by Josep Lluscâ. Each of its parts has been analysed individually to reach perfect synthesis in the composition, inspired in the figure of the Australian boomerang. The sofa is presented in 2 or 3 seater models and the chair can have castors instead of legs and different arm and back heights depending on the version.

EX.PILOT Dodo Arslan for spHaus

Made of polyurethane foam, EX.PILOT is reinforced with a steel frame resting on a steel four-spoke base finished with scratch-proof coating. The seat can be combined with a matching foot-rest. With valuable finishes, covered in fine hides, its profile is exalted and underlined by contrasting stitching.

The aluminum supports, placed along both sides of the chair, are machined with the advanced technology of CNC .This process allows to model the aluminum alloy profile with extreme precision. The aluminum is further given an electrochemical treatment to harden the outer surface that gives the alloy more resistance to nicks and scratches as well as a brilliant silver finish.
The mechanical heart of the chair is made up of a rocking mechanism that applies to one’s back, a soft and constant force. This bilateral pressure is obtained by the use of two springs that work in torsion incrementally, therefore transmiting these forces to the lateral supports.
The under-structure is made up of six distinct mechanical parts, all of which are constructed in stainless steel with the highest of mechanical precision in order to avoid creaking
The backrest has an angular movement of thirteen degrees at the end of which a sturdy limiting device blocks over rotation and positions the center of gravity at the base, thus avoiding dangerous inclinations and instability
The extreme strength and dimension of the mechanical parts of this chair are needed because about 50% of the torsional, static, and dynamic loads caused by a person sitting in the chair are directly applied to the structure.
