The electric elevator is the preferred type. It usually requires a machine room on the roof or the uppermost floor of the building. The base of the shaft sits in a half basement.
Elevators are found in industrial, commercial and residential buildings, as well as in private homes.
An electric elevator system without a machine room was invented in 1996, though it operates the same way as other types. An electric motor raises and lowers the cabin via a steel cable running over a pulley. One end is attached to the cabin, the other to a counterweight. As the cabin ascends, the weight descends, and vice versa. Some elevator cabins offer panoramic views through their transparent sides.
Choice will depend on the number of floors in the building, the frequency of use, the shaft dimensions and the possible need for a machine room on the roof.
