As well as marking the entry point to a building, an entrance, or door mat limits the amount of dirt or moisture tracked inside, reducing maintenance costs and improving hygiene within the building.
Mat characteristics will depend on factors such as the level of traffic, space available and whether used in a public or private setting. Home door mats tend to be smaller and less sturdy, but offer a wider range of decorative finishes. Those for high-traffic areas are often as long as possible for optimal dirt removal and feature security, robustness and ease of maintenance.
Determine how large the mat must be to ensure maximum dirt removal. Consider how well it will stand up to regular use and its ability to resist staining, fading, mold and bacteria. It should be non-slip and fastened down to reduce tripping risks. Evaluate its useful life and environmental characteristics such as recycling options.
Mats used at public or commercial buildings must comply with applicable fire and other regulations. The appearance and texture of the mat will contribute to the style of the entrance area. It can be chosen to blend into or stand out from its surroundings. Evaluate its ability to maintain an attractive finish even after heavy use.
