Immediately following the French Revolution, cabinetmakers began creating furniture that captured the essence of Louis XVI, while introducing entirely new decorative elements: Legs without fluting, sheathed feet, lozenge motifs and ebony borders. Mahogany was abandoned in favor of light, clear-toned cherry wood.
