Safety first
The Otis 506 NCE embodies a host of safety features making it probably the safest escalator yet designed. Many of those features have been pioneered by OTIS such as the GUARDIAN® skirt panel - now established as the industry reference. Then there are special deflectors which prevent objects from being trapped in the handrail entry box. Step rigidity is assured through the one-piece, die-cast aluminium step. And, critically, the gap between the step and the skirting is not only constant but less than that specified by the codes. Indeed in most areas concerning safety, the Otis 506 NCE not only meets the codes but greatly exceeds them.

Upper End
Going up - The comb angle is designed to be 15° to the horizontal, to make it easier to push a shopping cart over the comb when landing.
Going down - The comb plate angle is designed to be 3° to the horizontal, to prevent a fully loaded shopping cart from running downwards when boarding.
Lower End
Going up - The comb plate is designed to be 350mm (13.8 in.) long, to make it easier to push a shopping cart over the comb plate when boarding.
Going down - The minimal comb angle is designed to be 1.4° to the horizontal. This delivers an extra smooth landing experience when pushing a shopping cart over the comb.
Comb
Each comb is made of die-cast aluminum, rigidly fixed to improve strength and durability.
Each comb tooth is 3.2mm (1/8 in.) thick to provide sufficient strength so that the combs are more durable against repeated impact by shopping carts.
Floor Plate
The stainless steel plate with anti-slip pattern, originally developed by Mitsubishi Electric for escalators, provides for safe and steady footing.

Mitsubishi Electric was first to replace induction motors with highly efficient permanent magnet (PM) motors for high-speed and super high-speed elevators, fully developed in-house. Since PM technology is uniquely suited to miniaturization, permitting the development of a more compact gearless traction machine for high-speed elevators that boast a 2.0 to 4.0 meters per second (6.6 %u2013 13.1 ft./sec.) speed at a capacity up to 1600 kilograms (3,527 lbs.). Slim and efficient, the PM motor is a demonstration of Mitsubishi Electric proprietary stator core technology that results in a compact traction machine that%u2019s about 30% smaller in axial dimension than previous models.
Compact Control Panel
The control panel that drives the PM motor incorporates the most advanced, low-loss IGBT (Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistor) as well as optimal design. The result is a control panel less than half the size of previous models.
