An escalator is an electrically-powered moving staircase which facilitates moving from level to level.
Escalators are common in high-traffic locales such as shopping centers, public buildings, airports, railroad and subway stations.
Great efforts have been made to reduce escalator energy consumption. Some stop automatically when there are no riders. Some change direction as more riders approach one end or the other. This eliminates the need for separate up and down escalators. This type is programmed to prevent direction changes while users are on board. LED illumination of signs also reduces energy use.
