A fence is a freestanding or permanent barrier which prevents or restricts movement from one area to another. It is usually significantly lighter, less expensive and easier to remove or reuse than a wall. On ArchiExpo, fences are defined by material, type and function.
A fence may be used to enclose an athletic field, to protect and secure livestock or pets and to limit access to private areas or dangerous sites like construction zones and power facilities. It also may be used to define a route, a passage or property boundaries. Mobile fencing is often used for temporary applications, such concerts or festivals.
Secure areas may be enclosed by high fences restricting vision and topped by barbed wire or other deterrents. In contrast, fences around playgrounds and similar public spaces are often lower and easy to see through so that children are protected but can be easily monitored.
Steel, mesh, wood, stone, concrete and other materials are used to build fences.
Choice will depend on privacy and security needs, whether the fence will be fixed or movable, and whether its style is inviting or dissuasive. Budget, number of required fencing panels and height also should be considered.
While airport and similar barriers must offer a sturdy defense, those designed to guide or protect the public (e.g., a fence around a football field) may be decorative and welcoming to invite the user into the space.
