A followspot produces a powerful, concentrated beam which illuminates and follows the movements of an actor in order to focus spectator attention on that particular character. The best-known version is the Super Trouper®, first manufactured in 1956. Early versions had a high-intensity carbon arc lamp, but these were replaced by xenon bulbs in the 1980s. There are long-, medium- and short-throw versions of these spots.
ApplicationsSuch devices are used for television, theater and musical and other stage lighting.
TechnologiesThese spotlights consist of a light source, generally a discharge lamp with a high color temperature, mechanical adjustment of the intensity of the light beam, a manually focused lens, an iris and a color magazine. The iris controls the diameter of the beam, while the magazine holds gels to modify light color.
