How to choose this product

A front-loading washing machine opens from the front. It is often installed underneath worktops in kitchens, bathrooms or utility rooms. The door may have a glass window allowing the user to follow the progress of the washing cycle.

Applications

These machines may be designed for home, commercial, medical or industrial settings, including laundromats and hotels. The capacity, cycle length and maximum load vary with model. Some double as dryers.

Technologies

The washing machine normally has two steel drums. The inner perforated drum spins around within the outer, watertight drum. Water is pumped into and out of the system at the correct time and temperature.

How to choose

Residential models usually come in standard sizes. Ensure that there is enough space for the machine to be easily loaded. High-volume commercial washers often are of better quality and have greater capacity, but are bulkier and more expensive. Choice of machine capacity will depend on volume and frequency of washing, and the type of garments or fabrics to be washed.

Check the energy efficiency rating, water use and washing performance. Consider noise level and the range of features. A washer-dryer may be preferable in small apartments where space is limited. Examine the terms of guarantees and warranties, since washer repair is often expensive.
