This famous chair, which is narrow and tall, was conceived by Mackintosh, more for decorative intentions than purely for function. It was destined, along with its twin, to the bedroom of the "Hill" house near Glasgow in Helensburgh, which the architect designed in 1902 and that belonged to publisher Walter W. Blackie. The two chairs, in black ebanized wood are still there and maintain their original effect, standing out against completely bare walls.
The "Hill House" is considered as a fundamental work of Mackintosh because it shows the extraordinary vision, talent and leadership of the master who - far from outmoded art noveau style - expressed himself through new severe and stylized lines, in a functionalist search which - years later - would possess the fervid minds of the Bauhaus.
