A grab bar is a hand rail, usually cylindrical, designed to provide support, helping users stand up and sit down, facilitating balance and preventing falls. It is most commonly found in bathrooms in public buildings, medical facilities and as a mobility aide in homes.
These devices help users with mobility difficulties remain more independent. For example, grab bars near doors and steps provide support during everyday activities. They may also provide support when climbing ladders or on public transport.
Such bars can be wall- or floor- mounted, and are most commonly made from metal (e.g., steel, aluminum) or plastic. They can be fixed with screws, adhesive, or with suction cups, depending on the surface.
The grab bar needs to remain stable when users exert force on it. In the absence of an appropriate vertical surface, a floor mounted unit may be a suitable solution. Suction cup attachment may be used to avoid permanent damage to surface finishes, but only works on certain surfaces, such as glazed tile.
