The Online Architecture and Design Exhibition
A kitchen island is a work area in the middle of the kitchen consisting of a counter, sometimes with cabinets. It can be custom-made or standard. An island can be installed in an existing kitchen if space permits.
Islands are found in home and commercial kitchens. They can include a stove, a vent hood, a sink or simply provide additional counter space. The kitchen should be large enough to permit easy movement around the island and allow cupboard doors to be opened fully.
As with an other kitchen installations, islands can be made of glass, wood, stainless steel, galvanized iron, laminate, wood veneer and other materials. There are many different shapes and styles available, some with upper cabinets.
Choice depends on available space. There should be at least 1.5 meters between the island and other kitchen installations. Style should match kitchen decor, be it period, traditional, contemporary, design or another type.
