For more than 200 years European needlepoints have been hand-stitched on to canvas using fine woollen yarn. The motifs, some of them very old, which we at casador have brought back to life for our customers, show sometimes opulent, sometimes playful animal and flower motifs. These carpets, hand-woven from the finest woollen yarn, have been a permanent feature of the very best houses since the seventeenth century. Initially based on Turkish designs, over time they became hand-made in 'European' patterns, above all with fantasy-filled flower and animal motifs and elaborate ornamentation. Even today an Aubusson has lost none of its appeal. Carpet manufacture in France began with the Savonnerie. At the beginning of the 17th century Pierre Dupont founded the first carpet factory in France, in an old soap factory: the 'Hospice de Savonnerie'. Hand-woven at first on a special loom by order of the king, an independent European carpet style quickly developed, one which soon made its appearance in all the palaces of Europe.
casador has rediscovered this old weaving technique, along with numerous motifs and patterns. Over 400 years after the first carpet was produced we are once again creating exquisite Savonnerie carpets to our customers%u2019 specifications.
