A self-closing tap allows water to flow for a predetermined period before shutting it off automatically. It is designed to limit waste resulting from user negligence. Savings can be as much as 60% in models with manual activation of the water flow, and 70% in completely automatic taps.
These devices are found primarily in public washrooms, where the large number of users can result in significant waste of water.
Some such taps are turned on by pushing a button or moving a lever, while others are entirely automatic, activated by a presence sensor. Certain models can be turned off manually by working the control a second time.
