A shade sail consists of a piece of shade cloth, usually triangular or rectangular, with attachment points that can be tensioned with pulleys or turnbuckles. It constitutes a simple, yet decorative way to protect an exterior area from the sun.
These devices are found shading home yards, terraces and pools, restaurant terraces, schoolyards, playgrounds, parking lots and other public open spaces.
The sail's tensioning lines are attached to various points on buildings, trees, the ground or specially installed poles. These can be of different heights, imparting the appearance of movement to the stretched sail. Anchor points must be sturdy to resist the tension necessary to maintain proper sail shape, preventing it from flapping in the wind.
Choice will depend on sail size and shape, as well as that of the area to be shaded. Fabric type, quality and seam and fastener sturdiness are also important for durability. For example, a sail with micro perforations enhances air circulation, while a waterproof model protects against rain as well as sun. Fabric color affects the amount of UV light it filters out.
