A shutter is an interior or exterior window covering designed to control the passage of light or heat between the room and the outdoors. The opening system can be swinging, sliding, roll-up or folding.
Shutters are found on windows, partitions and skylights. Some materials provide security, as well as light and heat control.
Most shutters are hand-operated, but powered versions with a wall or remote control also exist. Automatic control systems can be programmed to open and close the shutters at preset times.
Choice will depend on placement, opening system and materials, which include wood, PVC and metal. Interior shutters are generally of wood or PVC, and control primarily light. Exterior models are made from stronger, weather-resistant materials, thus providing insulation and security, as well.
