Design: Egon Eiermann, 1949
This is the best known and proportioned of Egon
Eiermann´s rattan furniture designs.
Over one hundred of the E10 chairs were used
both internally and externally in the German
Pavillion designed by Egon Eiermann at the
renowned 1958 World EXPO in Brussels.
Eiermann had an affection for the aesthetic and
working properties of rattan. In one of his early
house designs of 1936 he created garage doors
in rattan.

The Woven Rattan Lounge Chair and matching Ottoman are scaled for comfort. The Lounge Chair welcomes one with a loose back pillow, sophisticated kidney pillow and a generous seat cushion - all filled with a luxurious down-and-feather blend. The seat cushion rests on a fully sprung deck. The frame is intricately wrapped in woven rattan core in an expressive weave that creates a textured pattern. The Lounge Chair and Ottoman have a distinctive cut-out arm design that reveals the rattan pole frame upon which the rattan core is woven, and accentuates the relationship between the rattan frame and the textured cast bronze of the chair's and ottoman's front legs. The pieces are shown upholstered in a new Horesehair Linen Weave fabric from McGuire's exclusive Headlands Collection textile line.

When we began experimenting with seats made with bent-laminated slats, the goal was to get as close to the comfort of upholstery as we could using solid woods. The individual laminations bend with the weight of the body, easing stress on spine and shoulder blades. We've also worked to develop a lumbar support that is almost universally comfortable. The chair seat pivots at the front, and movable steel pins in the legs allow the seat to be positioned at different reclining angles. The back is high enough for even the tallest of my friends to rest their head.
This design is about more than seeking comfort though. It reflects a long held interest in the skeletal nature of structures, like bridges and timber-frame houses. Beside our heavier designs, we will continue to engineer pieces that are stripped to a minimum of materials: chairs built with individual "sticks" of uniform dimension, carefully joined to create a rigid frame.

|
This piece represents the earliest developments of our bent laminated furniture. The entire seat pivots at the front and can be adjusted by means of a leather strap. All of the joinery is exposed and shows the mechanical, wedged construction of the Maple frame.

The aluminum supports, placed along both sides of the chair, are machined with the advanced technology of CNC .This process allows to model the aluminum alloy profile with extreme precision. The aluminum is further given an electrochemical treatment to harden the outer surface that gives the alloy more resistance to nicks and scratches as well as a brilliant silver finish.
The mechanical heart of the chair is made up of a rocking mechanism that applies to one’s back, a soft and constant force. This bilateral pressure is obtained by the use of two springs that work in torsion incrementally, therefore transmiting these forces to the lateral supports.
The under-structure is made up of six distinct mechanical parts, all of which are constructed in stainless steel with the highest of mechanical precision in order to avoid creaking
The backrest has an angular movement of thirteen degrees at the end of which a sturdy limiting device blocks over rotation and positions the center of gravity at the base, thus avoiding dangerous inclinations and instability
The extreme strength and dimension of the mechanical parts of this chair are needed because about 50% of the torsional, static, and dynamic loads caused by a person sitting in the chair are directly applied to the structure.
