A slide is a long, smooth, sloped surface which a person can slide down. It may be designed for use over water or on land. Some have side barriers or are completely enclosed for safety. Others can accommodate several users simultaneously. The slide may be straight, undulating or spiral to increase amusement or speed.
Most slides are found in playgrounds or private yards. Those for young children are typically smaller and less steep than slides for older users. Some versions at fun fairs or play centers are dimensioned for adults. There are both inflatable models and those integrated with other play equipment. Slides at water parks and swimming pools often use a continuous flow of water to minimize friction and increase speed.
Dry slides for outdoor use are often made of sturdy, corrosion-resistant materials such as wood or stainless steel. Wet slides frequently are made from light, strong, weatherproof materials such as fiberglass. Many are made to measure in small sections which are bolted together.
Consider the age and the number of users the slide will accommodate, and whether it will be used in a dry or wet environment. The slide must be sturdy enough to stand up to heavy use. Verify compliance with applicable regulations governing models in playgrounds, water parks and similar venues. A water park slide may require an uninterrupted flow of water over its surface. Determine how users will reach the top of the slide safely.
