Description
Patricia Urquiola has an innate capacity to design objects with a strong connotation, which revolve around the upholstered families. A new look at the design hammock style, presented at the Ideal House exhibition in Cologne; the ideal companion to the Smock armchair furniture presented at last year’s Milan Furniture Show. It design displays the same exploration of solids and voids, comfort and luxury, that distinguishes Urquiola’s work. This sophisticated, elegant sofa manufacturer uses a light, stylised design centred around the draping over the ring-shaped armrests. The unusual feature of a full-length zip is for removing the cover and for joining different materials. The two rings have become arms, the objective lightness is maintained and transmitted by the slightly foamed shell. The small armchair stands on a slide furniture or on a central tube. The particular feature is the smock stitch, embroidered at the sides, giving a luxurious and refined quality. A leather version is also envisaged, again confirming Moroso as a company that offers a unique product representing a way of working that, even though industrialized in its processes, remains hand-crafted in the attention to detail and the finishes. |

LEAVING EARTH’S GRAVITY BEHIND
Like a new grammatical declension in the idiom of design, the lines of the DS 256 from the de Sede Design Team forge an organic whole. It represents a purity of concept, an armchair manufacturers that appears cast in a single stroke. With its one-piece upholstery, the chair manufacturer exudes an unbearable lightness of being: its edges and curved sections strikingly underscored by the lapped seams. The unpretentious subframe with its discreetly flowing circular aluminium base-plate merges smoothly into the design of the armchair. Its tilt mechanism, height adjustment and comfortable angle of inclination give the DS 256 all the classic qualities of a handmade shoe from a master-cobbler’s last: it ensures an absolutely perfect fit. Its soaring armrests mirror furniture the rhythmic wing beat of a flamingo. Sitting in this armchair, you rise effortlessly above the irksome tug of bourgeois gravity. It challenges us to reconsider the rigid concepts of form and function. |

The DS -166 from Hugo de Ruiter can justifiably lay claim to being unique and unrepeatable. The original idea was based on an artistic principle, yet without neglect of functionality. The outer form of the armchair suppliers has all the quality of a sculpture thanks to its upward tapering lines. This in turn results not from a mere whim of the designer or from the proverbial wet finger held aloft to see which way the wind is blowing. To the contrary: it is the palpable consequence of the inherent laws of ergonomics. What Hugo de Ruiter is attempting to do with the DS-166 is to express the idea of comfort and design security through the swell of the armchair’s lines. And it is a security that anyone sitting in the DS-166 feels most profoundly. In figurative terms, his design blends the concepts of guarding and cosseting. The armchair’s swivel-tilt mechanism additionally helps underpin a sense of the lightness of being. In the DS-166, the grande geste of design becomes a harbinger of comfort, while the reduction of its lines imbues this seating with a peerless richness. |
