Tiles are used to cover floors, walls, staircases and other surfaces. They vary in format, constituent materials and mechanical characteristics.
Tiles are used in kitchens and bathrooms because they are easy to clean. Floor tiles should have a non-slip surface. Outdoor tiles hold up well in freezing weather, making them ideal for climates with cold winters. Less porous tiles shed rainwater, oil and other liquids. Those made from porous materials should be treated to render them nonabsorbent.
Tiles can be made of ceramic, porcelain stoneware, terracotta, natural and engineered stone, among other materials.
Choice will depend on the desired ambiance. Natural stone lends a rustic air, while the reddish color of terracotta creates a warmer environment. Other factors include indoor or outdoor use and degree of humidity. High-traffic floors should be covered with abrasion-resistant tiles.
