A wooden bookcase is used to store and display reading materials. It is available in a wide range of sizes and finishes, and may be built using sustainable resources (e.g., reclaimed or FSC certified wood). It may be wall-mounted or free-standing. On ArchiExpo, these pieces are defined by style or type of wood.
Such furniture is found in domestic and commercial environments (offices, libraries, hotels, etc.). As well as being functional, it also may be a design piece in itself, its texture, color and finish adding a natural touch to the surroundings. It also can be used as a space divider. Some bookcases have an integrated ladder, space for multimedia equipment, built-in seating or contain other storage compartments, such as cupboards or drawers.
While some wooden bookcases come pre-assembled, there are many flat-packed designs available. Although particle board is less expensive, the joints are more easily than solid wood.
When choosing, consider the dimensions and quantity of reading material to be stored. Decide on wood type, tone and finish. While solid woods tend to age well, be environmentally friendly and look more attractive, they may require more maintenance (e.g., periodic waxing) than laminated particle board (such as MDF). Consider how the style of the wooden bookcase will fit its setting, and whether its primary purpose is functional or decorative.
