ApplicationsThese windows are essential in cold climates to avoid loss of interior heat. They are also useful for acoustic insulation near freeways, railroad lines and other noisy areas.
TechnologiesThe interior surface of the glass may be coated with metal oxides to reflect heat back into the room. When used for acoustic insulation, the two panes should be of different thicknesses. For example, 10/6/4 indicates panes of 10 and four millimeters separated by a six-millimeter space. Windows should be accompanied by a decibel-reduction certification.
How to chooseChoice will depend on two elements. Thermal insulation, the U-factor, is expressed in W/m²/°K. The lower the number, the smaller the heat loss. Acoustic insulation depends on the difference between pane thickness and the distance between panes.
