ROSE WINDOW CATHEDRAL OF CHARTRES, NOTRE DAME
Arnaldo Caprai Gruppo Tessile srl
for domestic use
Precious macramè needle jewels that reproduce the rose window: an element set on the facade of the churches, that is the highest expression of the creativity and intelligence of artists.
Under the architectural point of view a rose window is a hole, even if it is filled with wonderful stone lace, which creates a special relationship between the exterior and the interior of the church.
The Cathedral of Chartres is one of the purest masterpieces of French Gothic art, not only for its complex esoteric symbols (see the labyrinth which is inside), but also because it was built very rapidly. Only 25 years were necessary to build it, from 1194 to 1225, because the whole population took part in the building, galvanized by the miraculous finding of the "veil of the Holy Virgin" still intact after the destruction caused by the fire in 1194. In the Cathedral of Chartres everything is very big, from the size of the church to the stained glass windows featuring stories from the Old Testament and measuring over 2600 sqm. Of the three enormous rose windows that stand out in the centre of the main fade and the two transepts, this is the most interesting one (southern fade) with stained glass representing the Apocalypse.
