With a strict limit of 5kg / m², our Design Team created a unique, lightweight aluminium frame with a translucent silicon coated fabric wrapped around it, which fitted the Architects brief perfectly.
Each of the double skinned Blade baffles are suspended from the primary steel roofing girders and spaced to allownatural light to filter through from the skylights above. Each canopy ranges in size from a tiny 2.7m wide up to 20m wide with combined total surface area of 1500m2. Despite their size the jumbo canopies undulating shapes and diffused lighting help to create a soft floating effect above the hustle and bustle of the travellers below.
With the design approved and fabrication underway, our priorities lay in planning for the installation, with all the high security requirements of working Airside at Heathrow. The logistics of timed delivery sequences for all materials and specialist equipment and most importantly organizing security passes for our night workers were all part of the project management process.
When the installation began, the fabric Blades were delivered to site in kit form and assembled on large tables. Using purpose built A-frames on wheels each Blade was moved into position and then hoisted into the air by a pulley system.
