Felt's unique collection of 100% wool felt rugs are made entirely by hand by nomadic women in the Tien Shan Mountains in Kyrgyzstan, Central Asia, from the wool of the indigenous mountain sheep using a traditional process that dates back at least 2,500 years. The rugs consist of a thick flattened wool felt base onto which is attached a surface pattern of interlocking wool felt shapes outlined in braid.

The shapes are symbols for the birds, animals, plants, waters and mountains that surround the nomads. These are combined to describe scenes, bestow blessings and tell stories of life in the ‘Mountains of Heaven’.

Each rug purchased from Felt is accompanied by a full explanation of the symbols used in the rug and the unique meaning they convey.

In addition to a large permanent stock of new and vintage rugs available to view at Felt's London showroom, rugs can also be made to order in any size / colour / pattern based on rugs in the collection.

Felt also produces a range of felt cushions and large floor cushions that replicate the rug patterns and are made exclusively for Felt by the nomadic rug makers.
