As with most of the traditional collections, also Ziegler rugs are being offered in many different qualities. Especially the large request for these rugs from the American market makes that many rugs are knotted in a lower quality. However, we will always select and buy those rugs that stand out in quality and originality. This means intensive purchase during our trips to Pakistan and search for the perfect unique pieces. To give you an idea : every 4 to 6 weeks we visit Pakistan to select new Zieglers rugs for our collection.

When buying Ziegler rugs, we pay attention to many things. The base for a good Ziegler rug is the wool that it is made off. The best wol for these rugs is Ghazny wool, a very strong kind of wool from Afghanistan. This wool is being spun by hand, which gives the Ziegler the right appearance. Currently many Zieglers are being offered, made of so called Karachi wool; this is a cheaper wool, but less suitable for Ziegler rugs. The stock of Ghazny wool is limited and because of that, expensive.

Furthermore it is essential for Ziegler rugs that natural pigments are used for dying the wool. These natural pigments give the rug beautiful old and faded colors and subtle color shades. Using synthetic color pigments would give a rug a ‘flat’ look, without the characteristic ‘abrashes’.

Finally it is important that the rugs are being washed in a correct way. Every hand knotted rug is being washed directly after the knotting proces has finished. Washing the right way, makes beautiful colors appear. Not using the right washing proces will again not give the rug the distinctive effect.
