These rugs are made by Berber tribes in the mountains of Morocco, the most famous of whom are the Beni Ourain of the Moyen Atlas. They are said to protect the human spirit from negative energy and the human body from the elements. These decadently deep-pile weavings are an art form that has survived for centuries, yet one that can look surprisngly modern. Visionary designers such as Le Corbusier, Alvar Alto and Charles and Ray Eames appreciated their graphic simplicity and incorporated them into iconic interiors. The Rug Company offers an evolving selection of modern and vintage examples of the Atlas rug tradition.
