The bergère armchair first appeared in 1720. It has a large upholstered seat and comfortable back whose extensions form armrests.
Configurations have varied over time. Among the several types:
- The wing chair has side pieces rising from the armrests to the same height as the back, partly enveloping the user.
- A Marie-Antoinette has a slightly curved back.
- The gondola model has a concave back.
- A lambrequin chair has a back whose upper part curves in on itself toward the rear, its profile resembling a shepherd's crook.
- The Pompadour type has an arched back and curved armrests.
