Natural paint is composed entirely of natural biological or mineral elements. It should be called "organic" only when its ingredients are produced by organic agricultural methods. Non-toxic and emitting no or few volatile organic compounds (VOC), this paint is less hazardous for the environment than other types. However, it does not carry a specific ecological certification.
TechnologiesNatural paints use egg, linseed or safflower oil, clay or casein as a binder. Solvents include water, turpentine and alcohol. Sunflower oil or essential lavender oils are used as preservatives.
How to chooseThe best natural wall paints are casein- or clay-based. They are safe and non-toxic, penetrate well and allow the wall to breathe.
