Combi walls are reinforced sheet-pile walls: a combination of tubular piles and sheet piles. Like sheet piles, tubular piles are fitted with interlocks so that the elements can be attached to each other. Foundations using combi walls are usually referred to as a sandwich design: tubular pile, double sheet pile, tubular pile, double sheet pile, etc., etc. The tubular piles give the structure strength, and the intermediate sheet piles create the watertight seal.
Properties of combi walls
Combi walls have the same properties as sheet-pile walls.
The customary diameter of the tubular piles is between 900 and 1800 millimetres.
Use of combi walls
Combi walls, like sheet-pile walls, are generally used for deep excavation pits, tunnel entrances, quay walls and car parks. Thanks to their robust construction, they can withstand greater loads. In addition, they are available at higher water-retaining heights. In 2008, we used a combi wall for the quay wall of the Brammen Terminal in the Port of Rotterdam.
