The Weightless Collection explores ecological principles of resource efficiency. The use of a durable, yet lightweight, recycled stainless steel frame was inspired by the revolutionary Eames’ furniture of the 1940s. The triangulated criss-cross frame also references the ubiquitous South African wirework sculptures and windmills found in the Karoo landscape. With its heavy-appearing top and lightweight legs, a design tension results that creates the illusion of a floating slab effect. The triangulated leg structures ensure the strength of the legs while the top is made from laminated timber that is hollow underneath, creating the illusion of a very solid top, without the weight of the extra wood. The lamination makes the top less likely to warp, as well as being an economical choice. The solid Kiaat timber top can be made to various sizes, and in other timbers and materials such as veneered board and Corian. The polished stainless steel legs can also be powder coated in various colours, and can also be purchased separately.
