ApplicationThick-coat metal-effect colouring system comprising Phase I (base material) and Phase II (activator). Suitable for application on virtually any substrate; typically used to create a weathered/rust metal patina on walls, furniture and façades in architectural projects.
Product propertiesWeathering Steel produces an individual rusty metal appearance for interior and exterior use. After at least three coats of Phase I the surface may function as a magnet board (interior). For interior installations a protective top coat may be applied to reduce staining. For exterior installations allow continued weathering to preserve the evolving surface character. The activator can also be used to rust bare carbon steel or iron individually. Every surface is unique.
Binder basePhase I (base material): special acrylate with iron particles. Phase II (activator): oxidant.
Degree of glossPhase I matt. Aqua insulating and adhesive primer semi-gloss.
Drying(20°C / 60% RH) Phase I dust-dry after approx. 30 minutes; dry to the touch after approx. 2–3 hours; next coat after 5–6 hours. Phase II (activator): next coating possible approx. 16 hours after last work step.
Spreading ratePhase I: approx. 2.5 m²/kg (one coat). Phase II: approx. 10 m²/kg (one coat).
Type of application- Brushing: use a brush with natural bristles.
- Rolling: use a long- or short-pile roller depending on the texture required; do not reuse tools for other painting jobs.
- Spraying: apply finishing varnish thinly; consult the Technical Information Sheet for details.
ShadePhase I dark grey. Phase II clear, slightly greenish.
Field of applicationInterior and exterior; suitable for walls, façades, furniture and many substrates including metals.
Package sizePhase I (base material): 1.8 kg, 8 kg. Phase II (activator): 1 kg.
Characteristics / Technical specifications- System composition: Phase I base material (special acrylate with iron particles) + Phase II activator (oxidant).
- Intended effect: thick-coat metal/weathered/rust appearance; applicable to virtually any substrate.
- Magnet board: after at least 3 coats of Phase I the treated surface may be used as a magnet board (interior).
- Exterior finish: allow continued weathering to preserve the changing surface character; activator can rust bare carbon steel or iron.
- Degree of gloss: Phase I matt; Aqua insulating and adhesive primer semi-gloss.
- Drying times (20°C / 60% RH): Phase I dust-dry ≈ 30 min; dry to touch ≈ 2–3 h; overcoatable after 5–6 h. Phase II: overcoatable ≈ 16 h after last step.
