Much more than just black
Cassis is a black hand-moulded facing brick of Nelissen Brickworks. This colour is obtained by a homogeneous mixture of a precise proportion of manganese dioxide with grey-red baking Löss loam. The colour of this brick ranges from mainly anthracite to coal black, with blue and brown shades.
The non-perforated facing from from the Obscuro range is sanded on five sides and provided with an oblong sloping groove on one flat side (frog, group 1). The structure of Cassis is characterized by a rough appearance. Furthermore, this brick has fine and irregular grooves in the sandy surface. The baking process is done in a gas-fired tunnel kiln under a slightly reducing atmosphere. The brick is made from Löss from Limburg, extracted from the plateau of Kesselt in the Meuse valley. The facing brick is revalued with raw materials from the Volcanic Eifel.
