The graphic structure of the design is derived from the sea turtle shell pattern. Two-thirds of the earth's surface is covered by water. The oceans and seas regulate the climate, create habitats and are the basis of all life. But: the world’s largest, contiguous eco-system with its immense biological diversity is under extreme threat. In particular, the toxic plastic waste and so-called ‘ghost nets’ become deadly traps for seals, dolphins, fish, birds – and sea turtles. In the view of the imminent danger of destruction and pollution caused by people, it is high time to pull the plug. In Dhivehi, the official language of the Maldives, “velaa” means turtle. It is after this extremely endangered species that we have named this new design developed by OBJECT CARPET exclusively for Healthy Seas. With each square meter of VELAA produced, we support the sustainable initiative for the protection of our seas – and, in particular, the protection of the sea turtle. Since time immemorial, the sea turtle was venerated as a source of energy and strength in creation myths. It is even considered by many to be the oldest symbol in the world. Standing for heaven, earth and water, this animal is a symbol of longevity.
