Description

This sconce combines two very popular motifs in the ornamentation of 18th century lighting fixtures. The knot, very popular from the reign of Louis XV, present for example on a model of François Thomas Germain dating from 1756 preserved at the Getty Museum and musical instruments, including hunting horns. They can be found on the chandelier of the golden salon of the castle of Rueil-Malmaison. Topped by a finely chiseled bow, whose ribbons fall delicately along the wall, three arms of light in the form of hunting horns support the candle wicks. Joined together by a mirror knot, the curves of the hunting horns echo those of the knot above them. The composition is balanced by the lines formed by the three horns, in response to the falling ribbon.
