And thanks to the artisans who fabricated these tiles over 100 years ago, we can salvage them from the French farmhouses and Chateaux and reinstall them in our homes stateside. This is a test to European hand made terra cotta tile. Still made the same way today, taking clay from natural deposits, talented artisans hand mold each tile and fire them in wood-burning kilns to 1800 degrees Fahrenheit over a 3-day period. Manning the flames to achieve this constant hot temperature is the secret to durable terra cotta tile flooring. A wood-fire is also the secret to their color variation and position in the kilns. However, antique terra cotta tile is just that - antique and thus, limited. At times, lots must be mixed to achieve the square footage one wants, adding only to the nuance of the floor.
