Beppe Borella works marble to shape figures drawn from mass play culture, a material that ennobles them with its classical heritage. His “toy-like figures” and toy tanks, seemingly ironic, become apotropaic fetishes: playful relics of a past childhood or talismans to ward off the anxieties of adult life. Challenging the material and mastering the veins of the stone, the artist emphasizes the solidity of marble and granite through his skilled craftsmanship. He moves between memory and reality, vision and playful spirit, destabilizing the real with irony and lightness, freeing the material from its weight. The combination of manual skill and creativity allows Borella to create powerful and harmonious works, sculpted in fine marbles from diverse origins. In the Millennials series (2005), Beppe Borella converts playful forms into symbolic figures, where the innocence of childhood crystallizes in marble, transforming into the weight of responsibilities and the awareness of adulthood. The works become a reflection on the contrast between lightness and gravity, between play and seriousness, between the memory of carefree times and the reality of contemporary life.
