Description
Tensar® HX-AE is a high-profile asphalt interlayer composite engineered to reinforce asphalt overlays, provide a stress-absorbing membrane effect when saturated with bitumen and act as an interlayer barrier.
Key features and benefits
360° uniform in-plane reinforcement offering crack control in all directions.
Proven improvement in fatigue life (up to 2× improvement in validated cases).
Triple function: reinforcement (load transfer), stress-absorbing membrane effect (SAMI) and interlayer barrier (waterproofing) when saturated with bitumen.
Controls reflective cracking in overlays and mitigates longitudinal cracking in widening operations.
Reduces surface rutting by restricting lateral movement of asphalt; can allow reduced asphalt thickness and extend pavement life.
Recyclable: pavements containing HX-AE can be milled and the milled material re-used in rehabilitation projects.
How it works
Composite of a stiff high-profile grid (continuous and non-continuous ribs forming hexagon, trapezoid and triangle geometries) thermally bonded to a polypropylene non-woven paving fabric.
High-profile ribs provide mechanical interlock with aggregate particles, delivering structural reinforcement and restricting lateral strains.
After saturation with bitumen during installation, the paving fabric produces a stress-absorbing membrane effect (SAMI) that distributes lateral strains between the cracked layer and the overlay.
Combined grid reinforcement and SAMI effect provide optimized control of reflective cracking and improved fatigue performance.
Typical installation and application
Typically installed beneath the asphalt binder or base course layers.
Installation: spray a bitumen bond coat onto the substrate, unroll HX-AE onto the bond coat (absorption into the fabric required), then overlay with asphalt using conventional paving equipment; specialist interlayer machines may be used for faster, higher-quality installation.
Applications include reconstructed pavements, new pavements where reduced asphalt thickness is desired, overlay reflective-crack control and road widening projects.
Validated performance
Performance demonstrated through laboratory testing and field case studies, showing effective mitigation of asphalt pavement issues and extension of service life.
Grid geometry: continuous and non-continuous ribs forming hexagon, trapezoid and triangle cells; near-uniform in-plane stiffness (360°).
Primary functions: reinforcement (load transfer), stress-absorbing membrane effect (SAMI) and interlayer barrier (waterproofing) after bitumen saturation.
Installation method: bitumen bond coat spray, unroll interlayer, overlay with asphalt; compatible with manual or specialist installation machines.
Performance claims: up to 2× improvement in base layer fatigue life in validated cases; effective control of reflective and longitudinal cracking; reduction in surface rutting in certain mixes.
Recyclability: pavements with HX-AE are millable and milled material can be re-used in rehabilitation.
