MATHIEU CHALLIÈRES PARIS

Who we are

Mathieu Challières, a long time copy-writer in large advertising
agencies, decided in 1997 to leave this world, considering doing
for others what he has always done for himself: designing and
making furnitures and decoration objects.

His next step was to attend Maison & Objet where he showcased
console tables, bookshelves and lights coming straight out of
his mind and... his apartment.

Two plaster chandeliers sold: it does sound small but it meant a
lot.

He then rented half a porter's lodge in the neighbourhood of Sentier
in Paris, and started to self-edit his first fancy named plaster
chandeliers : Holalà, Aïe Aïe Aïe...

In 2006, he launched the Volières, a collection of delicate
coppered wire lampshades welcoming a colony of life-like birds in
real feathers. Looking nothing like what had ever been created before, they remain unique in modern design, becoming almost iconic.

Sold all over the world, his creations are carried by famous stores
such as le Bon Marché, le BHV Marais or Smallable in Paris, NK in Stockholm, l'Appartement in Miami, J’aime blanc in Séoul, The
Conran Shop in France, England, Japan, etc.

As a singular designer, there is no common thread running through his
creativity. From baroque to contemporary style, Mathieu
Challières investigates materials: plaster, fabric, metal and
laminate.

His work focuses on stockists as well as interior
designers, for which he makes bespoke orders. All of his production is made in France, but more than 65% of his turnover is done abroad.
