Acoustic insulation blocks sound from entering or exiting an enclosed space, in contrast to sound-absorption material, which limits vibration time. In panels or rolls, rigid, semi-rigid or flexible, this material can be installed in ceilings, walls, partitions or beneath floors. Rubber, cellulose, fiberglass, rock wool, vegetable fibers stone and concrete are all used as insulation.
The three primary methods are:
- Mass. Any non-porous rigid material (over 300 kg per ) constitutes a good barrier to sound, the denser the better.
- Layers. Insulation can be obtained by layering. A variety of materials and thicknesses are suitable.
- Dead air. A hermetically sealed air space or an absorbent material between solid surfaces provides acoustic insulation.
Choice of insulation will depend on the size and nature of the space, as well as the type of noise-producing activity, be it within or without.
