PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
The works involved the strengthening of a precast concrete arch bridge extension to
an original stone arched Grade II listed bridge carrying the unclassified road (C1)
over the River Leven in Hutton Rudby, North Yorkshire. Traffic management was
installed to have single lane operation using traffic lights to maintain traffic flow on
the existing stone arched bridge whilst the original fill material was removed from the
concrete arches. The arches were then prepared to receive a new stainless steel
reinforced concrete saddle.
Diversion/support of the existing services was necessary during the works. A
waterproof membrane was then applied to the new concrete saddle before
resurfacing was carried out.
Other works carried out concurrent with the above was repair of localised spoiling of
the concrete arches, replacement of damaged / displaced stonework and pressure
grouting fill and pressure and hand pointing of the masonry where necessary. The
works involved close liaison with the Environment Agency to avoid pollution of the
river and protection of bats.
